Steampunk Style Mixed Media Canvas - Flying Unicorn

I am here today to share with you a steampunk style mixed media canvas. I wanted to push my color boundaries and go with something a little different (for me), I tend to stick to the blue/green color palette a lot. I decided to head in a rustic direction, however you can see I still managed to sneak in a little blue and green.

Products Used
Handmade rusty nails, rusty resin screws and bolts

I so love the Prima Stamp-N-Add Butterfly Wings, they are so funky and cool. I gave the wings a touch of Silks Pretty Peridot paint combined with a little Inka Gold on the wing edges.

The nuts and bolt have been created using hand poured resin into a mold. I painted the nuts and bolt with a combination of grey and silver paint and finished them off with a light dusting of rusting powder. They look pretty cool right?

Many thanks for looking, I wish you all a happy and creative day.

Mixed Media Challenge - Flying Unicorn

Hi Everyone,

I am happy to be hosting the mid month mixed media art journal challenge at Flying Unicorn. For the challenge I created this little canvas and tutorial. I hope you enjoy it.
Products Used
Bombay Ink Cherry

  • Scribble away some contrasting colours of gelato.
  • Blend with a water pen or even just a wet finger (this works very well).

  • Adhere material to card stock and cut out your petals, then sew lines in to all including your base card stock.
  • Adhere Flying Unicorn Adornments to create your funky flower form.

  • Using a small amount of glossy accent glue down a selection of different coloured Art Ingredients Glass Beads. I used the colours Plum and Zinc.
  • Trace around all your petals, grass, bubbles etc with PITT artist pen in black and smudge slightly with a damp finger (time to get those hands super messy!)
  • Add words of your choice, this was last minute addition for me as I thought it needed something else. These ones are Tim Holtz ideology Chit Chat.

Tim Holtz Inspired Canvas - Flying Unicorn Creative Team

Hi Everyone,

Today I would like to share with you a little Tim Holtz inspired canvas. This has been created to showcase a few of my gorgeous treasured Flying Unicorn Adornments. I love them so much!! Sometimes I even feel a little sad when I glue then down, a loss to my little box of Flying Unicorn  treasures. However don't they make a project just pop? Just look at them!

Also popping this project is tissue paper, such an easy and inexpensive way to create texture. My background is tissue paper adhered with gel medium, texture paste through a stencil and then coloured with various shades of distress ink with a foam pad. I love the grungy vintage look, makes my little found relative family look dark and mysterious.

Art Journal Page - Flying Unicorn

Hi Everyone,

Today I am sharing an art journal page with you all. Wow this was a fun one to make, I really got my hands in there, smudging and distressing. Eeek there really should be a photo of my hands here too, what an absolute mess, ink, paint glue. Oh well!!! I will never pretend to be a neat crafter, messy messy.

Let's get Dylusional!

Hi Everyone!

I am here with you today to share a couple of bright and colorful canvases (I am also wondering if canvases is a real word?, for the purpose of this post I will say yes). The canvases were created using the super vibrant Dylusions Ink Sprays, embellished with Flying Uncicorn Adornments, Flying Unicorn Lace and finished off with a few small watch parts. The texture you can see in the background is from texture paste, lace, Liquid Pearls and packing tape.

Mixed Media Challenge - Flying Unicorn

This month I am hosting the Mixed Media Challenge for July / August at Flying Unicorn. I invite you all to please come and play along!!

Large letter stickers, you either love them, hate them, or love them but never use them. I am on the fence, I like them but never really use them a lot to title my work, I always end up with heaps of leftover ones and often odd letters. So in this case I have used them as my background for my entire canvas and I love how it has turned out.

 Products Used

As you can see below I have used different types of Thickers and also used different types of placement, upside down, right side up, sideways. It doesn't really matter as long as your canvas is covered.

A coating of gesso...

To finish my canvas I have added random sprays of Dylusion Ink Sprays. I waited for the sprays to dry and then added a full coat of black acrylic paint. I let it dry slightly (every so slightly) and then began removing the black paint with a baby wipe. To intensify the color I then added a few more squirts of ink spray. To finish I added a few colored chipboard hearts (which all had a thick coating of crackle accents) and a few small watch parts and cogs.

Rules

- All Standard Rules apply

- Your project must be mixed media based (journal, canvas, card, scrapbook page, your choice!)

Finnabair Inspired Tags - Flying Unicorn

Who can guess who inspired me to make these tags? (hint, read the title of this post) yep none other than Finnabair. I so love her work, her designs and the way she utilizes all different mediums and tiny treasures.

My two tags have been created using the always AWESOME Flying Unicorn Adornments.

One more share, this is an old one but the same technique was used to create the above tags and below paper mache horse. Here is the link to Finnabair's tutorial on the horse.

Many thanks for looking, I wish you all a fabulous and creative day.

Tim Holtz Exploding Box - Flying Unicorn

Hello Everyone,

I am here with you today to share a Tim Holtz inspired exploding box. Ahhh yes it is certainly no secret that I am a HUGE fan of Tim Holtz and all (yes ALL) his products. I find Tim's work so inspirational, always pushes me to think outside the box.

Was a stack of fun creating this little exploding box, a little fiddly but well worth the effort put in. I have covered both the inside and outside of the box with the Idea-Ology Menagerie Paper Stash Paper. I love this paper, it is very versatile.

Products Used
Idea-Ology Ephemera
Vintage Photo Distress Ink

Many thanks for looking everyone.

I wish you all a most happy and creative day.

Distress Paint Cork Necklace - Flying Unicorn

Hi Everyone,

Today I would like to share with you a little upcycled creation. Where is the upcycled part you may ask? well the little discs are on old sliced up champagne cork. Cork is remarkably an easy product to work with, it was super easy to cut, distress paint went on like a dream, Tim Holtz rub ons took to the cork like a moth to the flame (no joke, much easier than paper). It was a stack of fun thinking outside the box on this project.

Tim Holtz Image Transfer Tags - Flying Unicorn

Hi Everyone,

Today I  have a couple of tags to share with you . I thought I would 'attempt' an image transfer with the new Tim Holtz Found Relatives. Recently I had seen the blog of the talented Shelly Hickox. Shelly had a step by step tutorial on how to do an image transfer with the found relatives. Looked amazing, so I thought I would give it a shot myself.

Now it kind of worked, it is a little rough looking and the tags are a little shredded. But I am kind of ok with that, I think it adds to the whole look. What do you think?. Lesson learnt though rub too hard and you will start shredding your tag along with your image. Rather than use baby wipes to remove the image glue I used 100% eucalyptus oil, this worked really well (but stay within the confines of the image, unlike I did).

Thanks for looking, I wish you all a happy and creative day.

Tim Holtz Reverse Canvas - Flying Unicorn

Hi Everyone,

I am here today to share with you all a little more Tim Holtz inspired creativeness. This is the first reverse canvas I have ever made, why I have left it so long I really have no idea, such a great way to showcase items. Below you will see I have used an absolute stack of Tim Holtz product, however I have also added a few other bits and pieces from my own stash. As you can see this is super busy but it works, it is like looking into a little box of vintage treasure.
