Mixed Media Hanging - Flying Unicorn Creative Team

Hi Everyone,

I am here today to share with you a set of three mini mixed media canvas's. These have been created using a combination of Silks Paints and Flying Unicorn Adornments. Although I have quite a few of my projects on display in my craft room my walls remain rather bare, I wanted to create something to hang on the wall. I thought I would begin with something little. These tiny canvas's only measure 2" x 2", so small and cute, a perfect way to really display and feature my treasured Flying Unicorn Adornments.

Trash to Treasure - Finnabair Creative Team

Hi Everyone,

I am here today to share with you a little trash to treasure make over. I am never one to throw away a good box, I will always tuck it away in a cupboard for a future craft project. This one in particular was a beautiful strong box and the fact it smelt fabulous was just an added bonus.

To begin my project I removed the decorative ribbon and traced an outline of the lid onto white card stock. As I would be adding a new top and also new sides to the lid and base to the box I also cut a long thick strip (the width of box and side of lid) of white card stock (this will be trimmed later to form my sides). Both my circle and long strip were given a thin coat of Art Basics Heavy White Gesso.

For my background colour I chose three colors of Faber Castell Gelatos, Blueberry, Metallic Mint and Snow Cone. As you can see below I randomly scribbled my gelatos and then blended them with my Prima Watercolor Brush Pen. In areas where I wanted harder blending I rubbed gently with my finger, yes you get a blue finger, but for the sake of art it is worth it right?

To enhance my background I chose to use Art Basics Soft Gloss Gel through the Elementals Grungy Grid stencil. I wanted an only slight raised transparent grid effect.

At this point in time I did not want to use my heat gun to dry the soft gloss gel so placed my stencil sheets out in the sun to allow ample time to dry naturally. In the meantime I took the base and lid of my box and firstly gave it a coat of Art Basics Heavy Black Gesso. As I will be using my coloured paper strips to cover the box later there was no point to paint the entire box and waste my gesso. Once the gesso was dry I applied a coat of Art Basics Soft Gloss Gel, this gave the black a gorgeous shine.

Although I loved my shades of blue and green I really wanted to add more colour and what better than pink in a beautiful sparkle and shine of Pink Mica Powder. To apply the powder I gently sprinkled some on using the end of my palette knife. Once sprinkled I misted with water and let it run slightly. Go gently with the powder a little goes a long way, always best to start with less, you can always add more. At this point I dried with my heat gun, something magical happened, the gel bubbled (and even popped in places), the mica powder set into the gel, it looked amazing, I was happy.

I cut my circle top and then measured and cut my box lid and base side. Using a black PITT pen I outlined a few squares of soft gloss gel and also the edges of my top and sides. I am not a sewer, so when it comes to sewing crooked lines I am a master, I quickly and crookedly zipped around the around the edges twice in black thread.

The create my flower base I used scrap material. I cut leaf shapes which were glued onto card stock and then crookedly stitched on my sewing machine (and then also outlined with black PITT pen and smudged). My metal embellishments were stacked on top of gold metallic sewing thread, I also wrapped blue metallic thread around my scissor flower base. Upon the scissor centre you will see a vintage button. To make my wording pop I have outlined with a black water colour pencil and used a water color brush pen to blend it in.

Cobalt Blue Glass Beads, these are my FAVOURITES, I just love them so. They were added to my flower centre, around my leaves and at the base. To add dimension to my wording I very carefully applied some glossy accents.

Steampunk 'Timekeeper' - Flying Unicorn Creative Team

Hi Everyone,

I am  here today to share with you a special steampunk project. This project has been created using the OTP which was included as part of the May Flying Unicorn Kit. I decided to decorate my book box with a number of different items, but the base I have used comes from the STUNNING new papers from Marion Smith called Timekeeper.

I love myself some steampunk style and I love myself some over the top, as per usual when I thought I had finished, I hadn't. I kept on adding a few bits and bobs here and there. Again I ask you all, is too  much ever too much? no, never!!.

A lot of the metal you can see below are Flying Unicorn Adornments, man of which has been cut up (especially the ones you can see lining the wings of Mr Timekeeper).

Origami Box - Flying Unicorn Creative Team

Hi Everyone,

Bex here with you all today to share with you all a folded origami box. I recently held a family craft day at my home where my Auntie taught us how to make these fun little boxes. Now when I say fun I mean fiddly, fiddly little fun boxes. They are so stunning and so very effective, to master these creations though you will need patience, however what you will not need is a lot of product. These boxes are held together with paper and paper only, I decided to further embellish the top with fabulous Flying Unicorn Adornments. To create a box like this you will need 16 sheets of square paper, I chose to use 8 sheets from the Prima Time Traveler's Collection and 8 sheets of plain white which I inked with Vintage Photo Distress Ink. So from one small 6 x 6 you could create 6 of these stunning boxes (if you chose to have a plain white inked bottom). A relatively cheap and stunning project to make!!. Here is a link to a YouTube Instructional Video.

I decided mine little a little something extra and added some beautiful Flying Unicorn Adornments which were hand painted with Silks and Lumiere Paints. The edges of my box were also inked with Vintage Photo Distress Ink.

Out of the Coccoon - Finnabair Creative Team

Hi Everyone,

I am here today to share with you another upcycled op shop creation. This month I was excited to challenge myself, my challenge was to use colours I rarely use (pink is usually my enemy), decorate with stamps, paint and markers only and to use NO metal of any sort (I use metal in everything!!!). So for me this was a tough personal challenge but I never back down from a challenge, especially one I set myself. Super happy with the outcome and now my daughter has a lovely wooden box to keep all her treasures in.

View from the front....

 View from the back....

Below you will see what this box previously looked like, it was sad, very very sad. Although sad, it definitely had potential. Like many things I salvage, a little love was in order.

To begin my project I gave the entire box both inside and out a coat of Art Basics Heavy White Gesso (not pictured, sorry!).  The vibrant colour comes from a combination of two Golden paints, Teal and Quinacridone Magenta. I applied the slightly watered down paint very randomly, allowing to blend and bleed in places. Going back after it had dried and adding more colour in places here and there, there was no science to this application, very much completely random.

While my paint was drying I took two sets of Prima Cling Stamps (Rust & Dust and Don't Forget to Fly) and using black archival ink I stamped onto white tissue paper. I stamped one sheet for my box lid with butterflies and circles and two long strips to wrap around my box edge with the bubbles stamp.

Flipping my tissue paper over I coloured the back in sections with Sharpie pens.

Now the fun begins, to apply the paper to the box I used Art Basics Soft Gloss Gel. This was quite a delicate operation so go gently. Apply a base coat of Art Basics Soft Gloss Gel, pat down tissue paper and then apply a top coat of Art Basics Soft Gloss Gel. Once completely dried I outlined all edges, circles and butterflies with a black PITT pen and smudged with my finger.

The stamped wording you can see was added after the first layer of tissue paper. I stamped all my wording onto another tissue paper, and again applied the same way with Soft Gloss Gel. To finish I gave the bottom of the box, inside and under the lid a coat of lovely Art Basic Heavy Black Gesso (not pictured).

Raining Cats & Dogs - Flying Unicorn Creative Team

Hello Everyone!!!

Well it has been a VERY long time since I have created a scrapbook layout, I think it has been well over a year. I am feeling rusty, I have to admit I found it hard to create without adding any mixed media in. Lots of fun making this one though, isn't my beagle Cooper a handsome young chap?

Old to New Makeover - Flying Unicorn

Hi Everyone,

Just sharing another op shop makeover. This is a little tea light holder, you pop a little candle underneath and the light beams out of the cut diamonds. This little number cost me a whole $1, so I was prepared to experiment. Yes it was certainly a little drab in its former life wasn't it? So who is brave enough to take their craft products and take them 'off the page'. It is fun converting old to new, I love to challenge myself.

To convert this drab little ball of horror (sorry this is a rather dramatic statement, but that is how I feel). I began by painting with a coat of gesso, after allowing to dry I added color, lots of it, painting here, painting there. Adding black acrylic, rubbing it back, adding more colour, dabbing off with a baby wipe. It is tricky to explain the full color process as with this project it was a little trial and error, if I didn't like it I rubbed it back and just kept on playing.

This photo was taken in the sun, LOVE the luminous effect, isn't it pretty?

Thanks for looking, I wish you all a happy and creative day.
